Stone outdoor fireplace and grill on a patio at dusk

Outdoor Kitchen in The Woodlands, Spring and Conroe

Outdoor kitchen in The Woodlands, Spring and Conroe is decided under the pavers: the gas line, the water, the drain and the electrical are sleeved while the ground is open, and the island is built into the terrace rather than dropped onto leftover patio. A grill run, or a full kitchen with a fireplace.

Where it goes

The kitchen is part of the terrace, or it is furniture

The outdoor kitchens that get used every week in Carlton Woods, Gleannloch Farms and Grand Central Park share one thing: they were drawn with the terrace. The island sits where the cook can see the table and the pool, the fireplace closes the room on the windward side, the pergola shades the seating at six in the evening in August, and the utilities came up through the base exactly where the grill and sink needed them.

Everything built on a base belongs to hardscaping. The terrace it sits on decides the base, a seat wall usually defines the edge, lighting goes in on the same trench as the gas, and where the village has a review committee the structure is drawn into the packet before a block is ordered.

What fails

Why outdoor kitchens end up unused

The four we are asked to rebuild most, and what a kitchen built with the terrace does instead.

01

Dropped onto a finished patio

CauseGas and drain cut in afterwards through pavers already laid. Patches in the field, a drain that never quite falls.

FixUtilities sleeved through the compacted base first, the island footing poured with the terrace, pavers laid to it.

02

A grill facing the wrong way

CauseThe cook stands with a back to the table and the pool, in smoke, in the sun.

FixIsland placed where the cook faces the room, fireplace on the windward side, pergola over the seating for the evening sun.

03

No drain in a masonry counter

CauseA sink and an ice well with nowhere to go. Water under the counter, the base heaving on clay.

FixSink and ice well drained to the terrace run, the counter base ventilated, the whole thing built on the same compacted base as the pavers.

04

A fire pit the HOA never approved

CauseBuilt, then reported. The DSC asks for drawings that do not exist.

FixFireplace, pit and pergola drawn into the packet with materials and dimensions, approved, then built.

The parts

What a kitchen is made of

Four decisions that decide how it cooks and how long it lasts.

Structure and cladding

Masonry block or steel frame with a stone or stucco face, a poured footing, and a counter that sheds water.

Utilities

Gas line with a shutoff at the island, water and drain for a sink, GFCI power for the fridge and lights, all sleeved through the base.

Appliances and layout

Built-in grill, side burner, fridge, storage, an overhang for stools where the counter faces the room.

Fire and cover

A masonry fireplace to close the room, a gas or wood fire pit for the seating, a cedar pergola or roof for shade and string lights.

Method

How a kitchen gets built

Most of the work is done before the stone arrives.

  1. 01

    Plan with the terrace

Where the cook stands, where the table is, where the smoke goes, where the evening sun comes from. Drawn to scale with the terrace, seat walls and lighting.

  2. 02

    Packet and permits

Gas work permitted where required; the structure drawn into the village packet with dimensions and materials.

  3. 03

    Base and utilities

Terrace base compacted in lifts, island footing poured, gas, water, drain and power sleeved to the island and fireplace positions.

  4. 04

    Structure, then pavers

Block or frame built, clad, counter set; pavers laid to the finished island rather than cut around it later.

  5. 05

    Appliances, fire and lights

Grill and fridge set, gas tested, fire feature commissioned, pergola and lighting on the same evening the kitchen first cooks.

Cost

What decides the number

Cladding, appliance count and whether a fireplace is included move the price most.

Tier 01

Built-in grill and counter run

A masonry run with a built-in grill and counter, gas run to it.

Tier 02

Grill station and counter

Island with grill, burner, fridge, sink and bar overhang, stone-clad.

Tier 03

Full outdoor kitchen and fireplace

Kitchen island, masonry fireplace, pergola and lighting as one build.

Tier 04

Typical whole-project range

Kitchen with the terrace, walls and lighting it sits in.

A gas fire pit adds a few thousand; a masonry fireplace adds a room.

Questions

Questions

What does an outdoor kitchen cost in The Woodlands?

A built-in grill and counter; a stone-clad island with grill, burner, fridge and sink; a full kitchen with a masonry fireplace and pergola. Written after the visit, with the terrace it sits on.

Can it go on my existing patio?

Sometimes, if the base under it is sound and the utilities can reach. More often the pavers around the island come up so gas, drain and footing go in properly, and are relaid to the finished island. Built with the terrace is cheaper than built after it.

Gas or wood for the fire feature?

Gas for a fire pit you light every evening; wood for a masonry fireplace that is the room’s focus. Gas needs a permitted line and a shutoff; wood needs clearance to the pergola and the fence.

Does the DSC need to approve it?

In The Woodlands villages, yes: fireplace, pergola and any structure over counter height go in the packet with dimensions and materials. Allow two to four weeks before a block is ordered.

Which way should the grill face?

Toward the table and the room, with the fireplace on the side the wind comes from and the pergola over the seating for the evening sun. The cook should never have a back to the party.
