A retaining wall fails because of water, not because of soil weight. Beaumont clay drains slowly, so water builds up behind the face and hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall out of plane. Every wall Boone's builds gets a drainage gravel zone and a pipe behind it, and anything above three feet gets geogrid reinforcement tied back into the slope. Steps and walkways are set out to consistent risers and generous widths on the same compacted base.

Those three things — drainage, reinforcement and base — account for almost every wall we are called to rebuild. What follows is how each element is specified, what it costs here, and when a wall genuinely needs engineering.

Walls, steps and paths are usually one project. Building them together means one excavation, one base spec and one drainage strategy.

Segmental block retaining walls

Engineered units with a split face and built-in setback, rated by the manufacturer for specific heights and surcharges. That rating is what lets a wall be designed rather than guessed at, and what an ARC committee expects a submission to reference.

Natural stone walls

Dry-stacked or mortared limestone and fieldstone where the wall is a feature rather than only a structure. Slower to build and more expensive per foot, and nothing manufactured reads the same against mature planting.

Terracing on a slope

Two or three shorter walls stepped up a slope instead of one tall one. Usually cheaper, almost always better-looking, and each terrace becomes usable ground rather than a bank you look at.

Seat walls and planters

Low walls that define a terrace, carry a cap you can sit on, and double as raised beds. The cheapest way to add seating to an outdoor room, because the structure is doing two jobs at once.

Steps and landings

Consistent riser heights the whole flight, treads deep enough to stand on comfortably, and a landing where the run is long. Inconsistent risers are the single most common trip hazard in a garden.

Walkways and paths

Wide enough for two people side by side rather than the 36-inch minimum a builder would pour, laid on the same compacted base as a terrace, and routed the way people actually walk.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Four causes. Three of them are decided before a single block is laid.

No drainage behind the face

CauseBackfilled straight against soil, so water collects behind the wall with nowhere to go. Hydrostatic pressure then pushes the face out until the courses separate.

FixA clean gravel drainage zone the full height of the wall, wrapped in filter fabric, with a perforated pipe at the base running to daylight. Non-negotiable on every wall we build.

No reinforcement above three feet

CauseA tall wall built as a stack. Above roughly three feet the soil mass behind it exceeds what the units alone can hold, and it leans progressively rather than failing suddenly.

FixGeogrid layers tied back into the retained slope at the manufacturer’s specified intervals, so the wall and the soil behind it act as one reinforced mass.

A base course set on soil

CauseThe first course laid on scraped clay. It settles unevenly with the shrink-swell cycle and every course above it inherits the error, so the cap line goes wavy.

FixA compacted crushed-stone levelling pad below finished grade, with the base course buried a fixed proportion of the wall height, checked level before anything is stacked on it.

Inconsistent step risers

CauseRisers adjusted at the top or bottom of a flight to make the levels work out. People climb by rhythm, so a single odd riser is where they catch a toe.

FixThe flight is set out from total rise first and the riser height held identical throughout, with the difference absorbed in landings or in the approach grade instead.

Specification

Specification that decides longevity

Four details separate a wall that stands plumb for twenty years from one that leans in five.

Segmental units and caps

Rated dry-cast units with a positive interlock and a built-in batter. Caps adhered with a flexible masonry adhesive rather than mortar, so seasonal movement does not crack the top course — which is the course everybody sees.

Drainage aggregate and fabric

Clean washed angular stone behind the full height, wrapped in non-woven geotextile so clay fines cannot migrate in and blind the void space. The fabric goes around the aggregate, never around the pipe.

Geogrid reinforcement

Uniaxial grid laid at the specified vertical intervals and extended far enough back into the retained soil to develop real anchorage. Cutting the grid length short is invisible on completion and is why some walls lean at year three.

Base and bedding stone

A compacted crushed-stone levelling pad, and the base course buried roughly one-tenth of the wall height. It looks like lost wall on the drawing and it is what stops the toe kicking out.

How it runs

Excavate, drain, reinforce, then stack

Most of a good wall is behind it and below it. The visible stacking is the quickest part.

  1. 01

    Survey the slope and the water

    We measure the fall, work out how much soil is actually being retained, and establish where subsurface water is moving before deciding on a wall type or height.

  2. 02

    Design and engineering check

    Wall height, batter, grid spacing and drainage designed to the manufacturer’s tables, with a structural engineer engaged where height or surcharge requires it.

  3. 03

    ARC or HOA submission

    Retaining structures need architectural approval in most Montgomery County communities. We submit dimensioned drawings and material specifications in the format committees expect.

  4. 04

    Excavation and levelling pad

    Trench cut below finished grade, compacted crushed-stone pad laid and checked level. The base course is set and re-checked before a second course goes on.

  5. 05

    Build, drain and reinforce

    Courses set with the drainage zone and filter fabric built up behind them and geogrid laid at the specified intervals, backfilled and compacted in lifts as the wall rises.

  6. 06

    Caps, steps and reinstatement

    Caps adhered, steps set to consistent risers, surfaces reinstated and the outfall confirmed. Walkthrough with any agreed warranty terms in writing.

What does a retaining wall cost in The Woodlands?

Installed ranges for Montgomery County. Height is what drives wall cost, because reinforcement and excavation both scale with it faster than the block count does.

How much does a retaining wall cost in The Woodlands?

Segmental block runs $25–$40 per square foot of wall face and natural stone $25–$50, both including excavation, levelling pad, drainage zone, geogrid where required and caps. A single terrace wall with steps on a standard lot typically comes to $3,750–$7,500. Walls are priced by face area rather than length because height drives excavation and reinforcement far more than the block count does.

Do retaining walls need drainage?

Always, and on Beaumont clay it is the most important part of the build. Clay drains slowly, so water collects behind the wall and hydrostatic pressure pushes the face out — that pressure, not the weight of the soil, is what fails walls here. Every wall we build gets a clean gravel drainage zone the full height, wrapped in filter fabric, with a perforated pipe at the base running to daylight.

How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering?

As a rule of thumb, around three to four feet, and it depends on what is behind and above it. Any surcharge — a driveway, a slope continuing above, a structure nearby — lowers that threshold considerably. Above it, geogrid reinforcement and often a stamped design are needed. We build to the engineered standard above three feet regardless, because the cost difference is small and the failure mode is expensive.

What is the best material for walkways in Texas?

Concrete pavers for durability and repairability, natural flagstone where the look matters more than the budget. Both are laid on the same compacted crushed-concrete base, which is what actually determines whether the path stays flat. Poured concrete cracks on this soil along a line you cannot repair invisibly, which is why we rarely recommend it for paths.

Can a wall be built against a fence or property line?

Usually, but it needs planning. A wall needs room behind it for the drainage zone and, if it is tall, for geogrid to extend back into the retained soil — and that space may be on the wrong side of the line. We check this at survey, because discovering it mid-build means either a redesign or an awkward conversation with a neighbour.

How wide should a walkway be?

Four feet if two people should be able to walk side by side, which is what a main approach to a front door wants. Three feet works for a secondary garden path. Builders commonly pour 36 inches on a primary route and it always feels tight — widening a path is one of the cheapest improvements to how a property reads.

Why does my existing wall lean?

Almost always water or missing reinforcement. If the lean is uniform along the face it is usually hydrostatic pressure from no drainage behind it; if it is worst at one point there may be a concentrated water source or a missing grid layer. We can often rebuild the affected section and add drainage rather than replacing the whole wall, and we will tell you honestly which it needs.

Do you build seat walls and planters?

Frequently, and they are among the best value elements in a garden because the structure does two jobs. A low wall defines a terrace, carries a cap you can sit on and can hold a raised bed behind it. Built with the terrace rather than after it, the base and the drainage are shared and the cost is materially lower.

How long does a wall take to build?

A single terrace wall with steps is typically one to two weeks on site. Multi-terrace projects run two to four. Excavation and drainage take longer than people expect and the visible stacking goes quickly, which is usually the opposite of what customers anticipate watching it.

Will a wall help with my drainage problem?

It can, and on a sloped lot terracing often solves both at once by intercepting slope water before it reaches the house. But a wall is not a drainage system on its own — if water is standing in a flat area or coming off the roof, you need drainage work, not retaining. We look at both together and tell you which is actually doing the work.
