Why they go green
Specification beats decoration
Almost every green, smelly pond we are asked to rescue has a filter chosen to match a pump rather than the water in it. It moves plenty of water and processes very little, nitrate climbs, algae follows, and the owner adds chemicals to a system that was never sized. Add two feet of depth that a July afternoon heats through and a liner edge that shows from the terrace, and the feature becomes a chore.
There are two ways water gets built into a garden. Both start from the same three decisions: where the water will be heard from, how much of it there is, and what has to live in it.

Filtration sized to the pump

Too shallow for a Texas summer

Runoff from the lawn

Do water features attract mosquitoes?
Moving water does not; mosquitoes need still water for about a week to breed. A feature that circulates, and a pond with fish, is a net reduction on the property.
Can a pond survive a Texas summer?
At three feet of depth with sized filtration and some shade, yes. The ones that fail are eighteen inches deep with a filter chosen from the pump box.
How much maintenance is it?
Pondless: top up the reservoir and check the pump. Stocked koi pond: skimmer weekly, filter media monthly in season, a spring clean-out — roughly an hour a week through summer. We hand over a seasonal schedule.
